Recognizing Emergencies
Emergencies can often be recognized because of unusual sights, appearances or behaviors, odors, and noises.
It may be challenging to recognize an emergency or sudden illness in some situations. The signals are not always obvious or easy to identify.
An employee may deny anything is seriously wrong.
If you think something is wrong, check the employee. Ask questions. Questions may help you determine what is wrong.
Once an emergency has been recognized, be calm and follow the emergency action steps: CHECK-CALL-CARE.
1 CHECK The scene – for safety, to find out what happened, to determine how many employee there are, and for bystanders who can assist. The employee – for consciousness.
2 CALL 9-1-1 or the workplace emergency number.
3 CARE For life-threatening conditions.
