Nutramax Security Indicatives:
Sophos Device Encryption
When it comes to cybersecurity habits, it’s challenging to devote the proper time, resources, and infrastructure changes necessary to properly secure the Nutramax network, for the sole purpose of good security posture. However, Nutramax IT has met these challenges head-on by implementing new technologies and policies like full disk encryption (FDE) on all Nutramax laptops, and we are currently researching solutions that will help us manage the encryption process.
Why encrypt my laptop?
With all of the security measures that we have in place, you might ask why laptop encryption is essential. If your laptop is lost or stolen, you aren’t just out an expensive device, you are potentially exposing all your information – even if it’s password protected. A bad actor can remove the hard drive, put it into another computer or drive reader, and access your data – no password required. If the culprit gains access, they have your personal information and perhaps Nutramax private data.
Encryption enforces your right to privacy. Most of us have sensitive information on our hard drives that is not for public viewing. This content can range from financial information, to private correspondence that we’d rather no one else access. The best way to protect this content is to encrypt those files and folders. Even if encrypted data is stolen or accessed without your knowledge or permission, it is useless without the password to decode it.
How does encryption work?
Encryption scrambles the data stored on your laptop. Encrypting our laptops makes it virtually impossible for hackers to decode the information without knowing your unique password or encryption key – even if they get their hands on the media where the data is stored.
We will be using Bitlocker, Microsoft’s built-in encryption utility. BitLocker is a simple program with no setup or management features of its own. Therefore we require a solution to manage Bitlocker. We are researching solutions with highly-automated installation and operation, efficient central administration, unnecessary manual intervention, minimal demand on employees’ time, and easy set-up, configuration and integration into our infrastructure. We don’t want these additional security enhancements to become burdensome to Nutramax employees. Our goal is to place as little of an impact as possible on all of you without negatively impacting security. We will roll out encryption on all Nutramax laptops by the end of the year, so if you have a laptop, be on the lookout for information to come.
