Multi-Factor Authentication and why it’s so Important
What is Multi-Factor Authentication?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security system that verifies a user’s identity by requiring multiple credentials. It is a critical component of identity and access management (IAM). Rather than just asking for a username and password, MFA requires other—additional—credentials, such as a code from the user’s smartphone, the answer to a security question, a text message with a code, or even a phone call. You’ve probably already used MFA in your daily life and may not have known what it was. Many websites or institutions such as banks, government websites, and companies like PayPal have MFA requirements that will force you to provide a 2nd form of authentication (e.g. PIN code or a text message) to ensure you are who you say you are.
Why is Multi-Factor Authentication important?
MFA is an effective way to provide enhanced security. Traditional usernames and passwords can be stolen, and they’ve become increasingly more vulnerable to brute force and phishing attacks. MFA creates multiple layers of security to help increase the confidence that the user requesting access is who they claim to be. With MFA, a cybercriminal may steal a password but will be thwarted by having to verify identity in a different manner. While some companies require MFA, many have optional settings allowing you to turn it on or off as you please. Some companies even have advanced logic behind the MFA process, only requiring it when they see strange behavior, such as an attempted login at 3 AM.
Moving Forward
MFA does not make you immune to attacks, but it can greatly increase the difficulty attackers have gaining access to your information. IT is strongly recommending enabling MFA everywhere where you can, to better protect your sensitive data.
